Abu Galauwa Kebir, Egypt

Abu Galauwa Kebir is a dive site in the Red Sea. Translated, the name means “Father of the Swimming Pool.” The reef earned this name because of its two large lagoons in the main reef. This large reef offers a safe and calm overnight anchorage for liveaboard boats. Divers usually explore the coral garden on the west side or the small wreck.   The Tugboat at Abu Galauwa   There is still no 100 percent certain information about the origin, name, or details of the wreck. However, based on its biofouling and construction, it can be assumed that the wreck was built between 1910 and 1925 and sank between 1940 and 1960. There are speculations about its name—perhaps “Tiensin” or “Tieng Sin”—but what is certain is that the wreck is 34 meters long and 6 meters wide. The Abu Galauwa tugboat may not be large, but it is beautifully covered in hard corals. At first glance, it is difficult to distinguish the wreck from the reef, but after a short while, you can make out the contours of the railing and bridge. The wreck starts at 16.5 meters and ends at the surface. Because of its shallow depth, it’s perfect for an afternoon or night dive.
