Marsa Alam

The dive site

Marsa Alam at a glance

The large, horseshoe-shaped Marsa Alam reef is located about 20 minutes from the port of Marsa Alam.

A few years ago, the safari boat "Legend" sank in the inner reef area, and today you can dive down to explore its wreck at a depth of about 12 meters. The inner reef area is ideal for night dives; otherwise, you have a good chance of encountering dolphins, especially in the morning. If you want to watch dolphins for longer, you should never chase them or snorkel quickly after them—the dolphins always come out on top. But if you show respect, keep your distance, and the dolphins are in the right mood, they’ll come closer on their own. Then you’ll have a really good chance of interacting with them.

Near Marsa Alam

A few hundred meters southeast of the reef, a small patch reef rises from a sandy area at a depth of about 20 to 25 meters, starting about 3–5 meters below the surface. On the west side, it is surrounded by many small ergs (coral blocks). The coral blocks are heavily eroded, with openings and niches. In the coral garden, which is 18 to 25 meters deep, you’ll find bannerfish, butterflyfish, red sea bream, sweetlips, and large groupers. Occasionally, the current here can be surprisingly strong.
