Diving in Maldives

The Maldives are located southwest of India and Sri Lanka in the Indian Ocean. With its 26 atolls, 19 island groups, and 1,190 islands, this island nation is one of the world’s most popular dream destinations. Only about 200 of these islands are inhabited, and 90 are currently used as hotels or resorts. For many, the Maldives are the epitome of a tropical vacation—small islands surrounded by turquoise waters, snow-white sandy beaches, and coconut palms. Added to this is a fantastic underwater world that can be experienced even while snorkeling. The climate is tropical, with year-round temperatures around 30 degrees Celsius, and the water temperatures in this island republic also range from a pleasant 27 to 29 degrees Celsius throughout the year.

The capital, Malé:
The capital, Malé, located on the atoll of the same name, is home to over 100,000 residents—meaning one in every two Maldivians lives there. Malé is the only urban settlement in the archipelago where no building may be taller than the main mosque! The Maldives is an Islamic state! The vibrant life of the capital stands in stark contrast to the otherwise tranquil daily life of the islanders. The charming alleys invite you to go on a shopping spree, and the fish market is also worth a visit.

Thanks to the international airport on the offshore island of Hulhule, Male also serves as the main entry point for tourists.
Please note: Importing any alcohol into the Maldives is strictly prohibited! Any “decorative beverages” you bring with you, regardless of the type, will be confiscated at the airport!!!

Diving in the Maldives:
The Maldives remain one of the most exclusive destinations for diving. Unique underwater landscapes—ranging from steep walls and beautiful coral gardens to gently sloping reefs—can be found here. In addition, there are several shipwrecks and many atoll channels where you can experience exhilarating drift dives. And numerous caves beneath the water’s surface invite you to enjoy an adventure-filled dive.
Nature shows itself at its most beautiful here: the large number of different fish schools, many reef sharks, nurse sharks, eagle rays, turtles, and manta rays make divers’ hearts race. For macro enthusiasts, the reef also offers numerous beautiful subjects, such as harlequin shrimp, wobberfish, and various nudibranchs.
Since diving is so highly valued in the Maldives, special attention is naturally paid to the protection and conservation of the reefs and dive sites. Since 1998, several atolls have been designated as marine reserves, as it was recognized that this is precisely why dive tourists come to the Maldives!

Liveaboard Diving:
The liveaboard vessels are generally designed purely as hotel ships and thus offer plenty of space to relax and sunbathe between dives. The diving equipment and compressors are located on a support boat, which is usually a traditional “dhoni.” Dives are also conducted from this dhoni. Depending on the route, there may also be an opportunity to visit a local island during a liveaboard.
Note: The maximum legal diving depth in the Maldives is 30 meters!
